  • Investigate and synthesize best practices for sustainability initiatives in faith-based organizations and in Lodi township and surrounding areas
  • Create many organizational tools for the consulting student team and organizational implementation team to leverage for collaborative purposes

This summer opportunity has been one of the most valuable of my undergraduate career. I was given near-complete independence for 8 weeks to prepare the partnering organization and lay the necessary groundwork before the rest of my student team joined onto the project in September. I gained interview skills and created a project management plan from scratch. I also became familiar with sustainability consulting and relevant organizational considerations. In all, I’m now confident that I can handle positions in both project management and environmental impact minimization.

Program Assistant at the Gaffield Children’s Garden in Matthaei Botanical Gardens (2019)

  • Research how other botanical gardens utilize their personnel to best facilitate nature-play
  • Outline and propose a new position to be created as the gardens expand to familiarize visitors with appropriate practices without hindering the children’s curiosity-driven nature play

Working for the Gaffield Children’s Garden has given me experience in project management and problem-solving. Upon starting the position I was briefed on the challenges that the garden was facing and given a broad objective to investigate potential solutions. I am grateful to my supervisor, Lee, for allowing me the opportunity to independently observe, conduct research, and develop my own proposal. The practice with designing research methods, setting my own goals, and ultimately finding viable solutions left me feeling proud of my work and more confident in my abilities to be successful in future settings.
